Direct-to-card (DTC) printers leave a white border around the card, whereas the retransfer card printers fully prints on the card, leaving no blank space at all. This is because the pictures are transferred directly onto the plastic card through a ribbon for DTC; but for retransfer card printers, the image is transferred onto a film before being applied on the card, hence it even enables the image to go over the edge of the card. Additionally, retransfer card printers are more flexible as the film can be applied to more types of surfaces instead of just plastic.
